Incident Report 20210731-00008 Incident Type: Operational Filer of Report: Joshua Bauer Date Filed: 07/31/2021 Date of Incident: 07/31/2021 Location of Incident: Porch; 2185 Mables Lane, Sevierville TN Persons Invoved in Incident: Joshua Bauer (operator) Devices Contributing to Incident: DJI Mini 2 Drone, ID#DR008g Factors Contributing to Incident: Operator ignorance, drone altitute autocorrection based on distance of objects below sensor Damages: Very forceful impact to drone likely with unseen internal damage, light rattling sound wihtin drone to indicate loose internal parts. Description of Incident: Operator gradually positioned drone as close as he possibly could to a security camera, resulting in the drone being approximately 5 inches below the ceiling and approximately 3 inches above a horizontal double two-by-six beam. The drone unexpectedly automaticlly ascended into the ceiling where flight capabilities of the drone were temporarily inhibited and it fell approximately 8 feet to the porch floor made of wood, followed by a hard impact. Determined Causes of Incident: 1. Operator was aware of the automatic reaction that the drone has in this type of situation but was not actively consideringing it in terms of how it could affect his flight. His subconscience understanding of a concept failed to materialize into appropriate action during flight based on understanding of that concept. Imposed Regualtions Resulting from Incident: 1. Suspension of personal allowed operation from the date 07/31/2021 to 08/15/2021. Exceptions can be made where operation is being performed briefly to showcase the prodcuct to others per their request, or per operator's suggestion following their portrayal of interest in seeing the drone. 2. Even after allowed operation date of 08/15/2021, operator is not to resume personal operation until all features of the drone have been memorized inside and out, and until operator is fully aware of how all these features are applicable in certain situations, and until the operator also has a comprehensive list of all things that go wrong while flying the drone paired with an in depth list of all actions that will be deployed both in favor of prevention and compensation/recovery/retaliation relating to those undesired situations. Operator is also to test every existing function of the drone in a controlled environment and in a mild fashion, in order to not only understand their function but to practice them and understand their usability in every day use. Imposed Recommendations Resulting from Incident: Operator is recommended to work on improving mental concentration when operating any type of aircraft or performing any type of task or activity that requires undivided attention of the operator, including operation of devices other than aircraft. Possible medical health/medical soultions should not be ruled out as a means to improve concentration, awareness, and ability to access back-knowledge while performing a task that needs it applied to the situation.
